Customer Video & Request

I've been swimming for many years and watching videos on youtube, so I understand what I'm meant to be doing, but my knowledge isn't translating into the improvement I want. What can I do better?

Coach Response

Overall it's looking good, smooth and calm.

Catch: At times the arms seem to go too wide when pulling the water (see linked image). This will make you more tired quickly. Think more about pushing the water instead of pulling the water. Similar to how you might push yourself out of the pool, keep your hands closer to the centre of your body as you push - this is an easier and more stable action than if your arms were wider. The hands should push straight back from where they enter the water to where they exit.

Catch: As your hands get closer to your belly button they seem to stop and return too quickly for the next stroke which means you are not getting the most out of every stroke. Keep pushing the water as far as you can without it feeling unnatural.

Catch: Start to rotate your body soon after you start your catch. This opens a channel for your arms to pass straight back. Don't rotate any more than is needed for the hand to push the water straight back; rotate about 25 degrees.

Legs: Some separation occurs in the legs which creates drag (see image). Keep those ankles closer together while kicking.

Rhythm: As you pull the water back with your left arm, start kicking with your left leg and then kick again with your right leg, then glide. When pulling water back with your right arm, kick with your right leg then left leg, then glide. Kicking twice for each pull is a 4 beat kick. Try this 4 beat kick to maximise the distance on each stroke. If you find yourself getting too tired then, for some time switch to a 2-beat kick with 1 kick per stroke (again left arm pull, kick with only the left leg and right arm pull, kick only once with right leg).

Let me know how you get on and if you have any questions about this advice hit me up in the comments on this lesson.
